Featured Supplier of the Month: Omni Custom Meats

Omni Custom Meats is a Certified Minority & Women-Owned company specializing in beef, lamb, poultry and pork.

In 1983, Curtis and Sharon Sullivan formed and opened Omni Custom Meats, Inc. In May of 2013, Omni will celebrate 30 years of success in the meat industry. There’s a lot of history and plenty of stories to tell, but the most important thing the folks at Omni want you to know is that they care about your business like it’s their own!

We’re proud of our customer base! Our products have been served on cruise ships, at the world’s best-known theme parks and to the military’s finest asset, our men and women in the armed forces.

Speaking of our military, Omni is Sysco’s processor for its “Commander’s Choice” Brand of meat products that are military-specific and meet the exact specifications that our troops deserve and expect!

Omni also is a co-packer of meat and poultry products for some of the most respected major manufacturers in the industry. Try some of these popular products!

  • Beef Braising Steaks
  • Beef for Stew
  • Clod Roast
  • Knuckle Roast
  • Fajitas
  • Pork Chops
  • Chicken Sausage

What’s new?

In 2011, Omni added a soon-to-be expanded cooking line and will be coming out with two new cooked items to complement its Pork Porchetta line by early spring.

Omni’s motto is “Bigger is not always better”! When you think of quality products, think of Omni!

Testimonials:

“It takes more than bricks and mortar to legitimize a small business and earn a place on ours and our military customers’ Key Supplier list. In the rough and tumble world of protein processing, Omni Custom Meats is proof that professional and courteous attention to quality service can successfully compete head-on with much larger competitors. As an SBA 8a (Small Disadvantaged Business Development) graduate, Curtis and Sharon Sullivan’s company has survived and thrived because they care equally about the distributor and the end-user. They have consistently and fully supported our broadline companies who hold Prime Vendor contracts with Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support. From awarding Sysco an exclusive licensing agreement for the Commander’s Choice product brand to on-site presence at demanding USDA food audits, Omni is there when we need them. Sysco has a long and honored tradition of working with people who have invested their lives in their small businesses. Curtis and Sharon Sullivan and their family of employees are proof that good things come from good people. We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with Omni and growing together.”
Steve Corkery, Regional VP Government Sales — Sysco

Omni Custom Meats, Inc. is a small business that cares about their customers’ success in a long-term relationship. I would highly recommend contacting Curtis Sullivan at Omni Custom Meats, Inc. to discuss the opportunities available.”

Category Management

While the new category management initiative is well underway, we will continue focusing on keeping our minority and women-owned supplier base intact. Category management is necessary in order to grow our business and keep Sysco engaged with our diverse suppliers. A lot of our customers depend on these suppliers for their Tier II programs and/or to reach their corporate goals.

“Category Management is our new way of doing business in which we use market, operator and consumer insights to determine a new core assortment of products. This approach will create an assortment with greater variety and on-trend products that meet customer needs on a national and regional basis. The goal is to generate a more efficient assortment that drives value for the customer and market share for Sysco.

Once an assortment is determined for a category, we will then engage with our suppliers to fulfill our assortment needs, lower our costs and help drive market share. Ultimately, through Category Management we will go to market with fewer duplicate items and fewer suppliers. As we go through this process, supplier diversity will be an important consideration to ensure that we meet the needs of our customers.”

Sysco's Minority & Women-Owned (MWBE) Supplier Spend

Sysco partners with over 400 minority and women-owned suppliers, and each year this number continues to grow. Diverse suppliers help Sysco meet the changing demands of foodservice operators, while supporting strategic alliances that enable the continued success of Sysco, our customers and our supplier partners.

It is important that Sysco continues to utilize minority and women-owned suppliers from a corporate and operating company position.

Sysco continues to grow its purchases (Spend) from minority and women-owned suppliers each year. Sysco's MWBE Spend for FY 2013 (Q1) was $185 million, compared to FY 2012 (Q1) MWBE Spend of $172 million.

Sysco's Supplier Diversity Registration Portal

We encourage you to continue communicating to your minority suppliers the importance of registering their company. An increasing number of customers are requiring minority suppliers to present their certifications, in order to count their purchases for contract purposes. If you haven't done so, please remind your suppliers to register their company as a minority and/or woman-owned supplier.

Please direct new and existing minority and women-owned suppliers to Sysco’s Minority Supplier Registration Portal. Click Here

The registration portal allows Sysco to source various MWBE suppliers for products of interest when the need arises. It also allows the supplier to upload the MBE, WBE, Hubzone or SBA (8A) certificates that their company has acquired, so that we have them available when needed, as well as create or update their company profile.

Why Supplier Diversity is Important to Sysco Operating Companies

  • Restaurant decision-makers are becoming increasingly multicultural, multilingual and multifaceted, and often require niche or unique products from minority or women-owned companies.
  • Minorities and women represent the fastest growth to the consumer/business base, and contribute dramatically to revenue streams at major corporations.
  • MWBEs can offer potentially a better price for Sysco and non-Sysco brand products.
  • Sysco can potentially receive quicker turnaround and better or expanded levels of service from MWBEs.
  • Supporting MWBEs allows Sysco to give back to the communities where Sysco employees live, work and do business.
  • Helps MWBEs grow and participate with other Sysco suppliers.
  • Many key customers depend upon Sysco's Tier 1 purchases from minority and women-owned supplier partners.
