Ron’s Home Style Foods & Sysco Foodservice

Ron’s Home Style Foods is a certified Native American-Owned (MBE) and HUB certified refrigerated salad company, offering over 50 different varieties of refrigerated salads, bases, dressings, desserts, entrees and frozen sides with a focus on high quality and homemade taste.

In the fall of 1967, Ron Woodall had the privilege of meeting John Baugh and John Woodhouse at Baugh’s office. Ron was interested in buying one of Baugh’s companies, called Market Produce Company. Baugh and Woodhouse were reluctant to sell, because they were busy organizing a new company, called Sysco Corporation. Baugh invited Ron to join their new company, which he declined. To this day, Ron laughs at himself for turning the offer down.

In 1970, Ron started his own company called Ron’s Krispy Fried Chicken. Ron’s Krispy Fried Chicken grew to a total of 79 stores, including 35 franchised units. Sysco became Ron’s main supplier of goods, which amounted to about 5 million dollars per year. The two companies continued to work together up until 1983 when Ron’s Krispy Fried Chicken received an offer from Church’s Fried Chicken that they could not refuse. The sale was finalized in the fall of ’83.

In January of 1985, Ron Woodall founded Ron’s Home Style Foods, Inc. (formerly Texas Kitchen Salads). His vision was to produce high quality, homemade-style salads. But he had one problem — he needed customers. The first person Ron went to was Jeff Boyce, who at the time was President of Sysco Distribution in Houston. Jeff authorized four of Ron’s products, but only one product, Red Potato Salad, was successful — the other products were slow movers. The early years were much more difficult than Ron had anticipated, but he believed in his products and refused to give up.

Today, thanks to Ron’s drive and determination, we maintain our focus on high-quality foods. We currently supply several Sysco Distribution Centers with over 30 different products and achieved 21 percent sales growth with Sysco in 2012. We have participated with Sysco in events including the Super Show, distribution center food shows and the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas. Our line is continually evolving with fresh new products and ideas to accommodate the changing needs of our customers in both retail and foodservice. We are always looking for new opportunities to grow.

Our fleet of trucks currently services Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma and Arkansas with the ability to expand into new territories.

Sysco's Minority & Women-Owned (MWBE) Supplier Spend

Sysco partners with over 400 minority and women-owned suppliers, and each year this base continues to grow. Diverse suppliers help Sysco meet the changing demands of foodservice operators, while supporting strategic alliances that enable the continued success of Sysco, our customers and our supplier partners.

It is important that Sysco continues to utilize minority and women-owned suppliers from a corporate and operating company position.

Sysco continues to grow its purchases (Spend) from minority and women-owned suppliers each year. Sysco's MWBE Spend for FY 2013 (Q2) was $202 million, compared to FY 2012 (Q2) MWBE Spend of $201 million.

Sysco's Supplier Diversity Registration Portal

We encourage you to continue communicating to your minority suppliers the importance of registering their company. An increasing number of customers are requiring minority suppliers to present their certifications, in order to count their purchases for contract purposes. If you haven't done so, please remind your suppliers to register their company as a minority and/or women-owned supplier.

The registration portal allows Sysco to source various MWBE suppliers for products of interest when the need arises. It also allows the supplier to upload the MBE, WBE, Hubzone or SBA (8A) certificates that their company has acquired, so that we have them available when needed, as well as create or update their company profile.

Why Supplier Diversity is Important to Sysco Operating Companies

  • Restaurant decision-makers are becoming increasingly multicultural, multilingual and multifaceted, and often require niche or unique products from minority or women-owned companies.
  • Minorities and women represent the fastest growth to the consumer/business base, and contribute dramatically to revenue streams at major corporations.
  • MWBEs can offer potentially a better price for Sysco and non-Sysco brand products.
