Bigelow Tea

Bigelow Tea is a woman-owned, privately-held, family-run company.

It is hard to believe that it’s been one whole year since Bigelow first partnered with Sysco to launch the hot tea category — and an exciting one at that!

Within the first 90 days, the Bigelow sales team had the opportunity to visit all 70 Operating Companies to promote training, education, and sales and to help lay the groundwork for future success. In the months that followed, Bigelow produced electronic and hard-copy desktop products for Sysco managers and Sysco customers to use as ready reference guides. These products were designed to provide a quick look-up tool for the user regarding hot tea category management SKUs; all three Bigelow, Bigelow Organic and Novus lines of hot teas available through Sysco; merchandising items; and very important knowledge about hot tea for Managers, Marketing Associates and customers.

The result of the Bigelow sales team’s hard work is 10,000 new Sysco customers and increased sales through Sysco distribution channels by 35%, all in FY14. And Bigelow Tea enjoys one of the largest footprints of any brand or category on Sysco’s Supplies On the Fly portal — 168 items and counting!

To top things off, as a Sysco Strategic Supplier Partner, Bigelow was recently selected to participate in an exciting selling opportunity in the Sysco Culinary Extravaganza at the 2014 G2E Global Gaming Show that will take place September 30 – October 2, 2014.

And, as if all this were not enough, Sysco has chosen to recognize Bigelow as a Minority Supplier of the Year and present the company with a Bronze Supplier award in the Beverage Category at the October 9th Supplier Recognition ceremony. What an honor!

Bigelow’s hallmark has always been quality. For three generations, the Bigelow family has delighted in crafting deliciously different, world-class teas along with herbal teas focused on great taste for tea drinkers’ enjoyment everywhere — right here in the USA. We’re so proud of our family tea recipes — and everything that goes into making them —we even take extra steps to lock in flavor and freshness with our signature foil overwrap for your enjoyment. Perhaps that is why whenever Sysco customers are able to sample Bigelow specialty teas, they choose Bigelow over other brands.

As we begin FY15, we look forward to growing our mutual businesses and strengthening relationships with our Sysco partners. And as always, we hope our teas delight you!

“Constant Comment”® Glazed Chicken

Your family will rave over this dinner delight using Bigelow Constant Comment tea as a glaze. They'll ask for seconds.

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

6 Bigelow® Constant Comment® Tea Bags
1 cup boiling water
½ cup apricot preserves
½ cup pineapple preserves
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 large onion, cut lengthwise and sliced
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
6 chicken legs, thighs or breast pieces, excess fat trimmed
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Steep Constant Comment tea bags in boiling water. Squeeze liquid and discard tea bags. In a small bowl, combine the tea with the preserves, soy sauce and red pepper flakes and mix until blended. Set the glaze mixture aside. Scatter onion in bottom of a heavy ovenproof baking dish. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken skin side down until lightly browned. Do this in batches, so chicken doesn't steam. As pieces are browned, transfer them skin side up to baking dish, placing them close together in a single layer. Season with salt and pepper. Pour glaze mixture over chicken, cover dish and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover, spoon glaze from the bottom of the pan over the chicken and bake 20 minutes longer, or until juices run clear when chicken is pierced deep between leg and thigh. Remove chicken, drain liquid into a small saucepan, and reduce over high heat to a sauce consistency. Serve chicken with a spoonful of sauce.

Sysco's Minority & Women-Owned (MWBE) Supplier Spend

Sysco partners with over 500 minority and women-owned suppliers, and each year this base continues to grow. Diverse suppliers help Sysco meet the changing demands of foodservice operators while supporting strategic alliances that enable the continued success of Sysco, our customers and our supplier partners.

It is important that Sysco continues to utilize minority and women-owned suppliers from a corporate and operating company position.

Sysco continues to grow its purchases (Spend) from minority and women-owned suppliers each year. Sysco's MWBE Spend for FY 2014 was $957 million, compared FY 2013 MWBE Spend of $918 million.

Sysco's Supplier Diversity Registration Portal

Our new supplier diversity registration portal is now available for suppliers to register online.

We encourage you to continue communicating to your minority suppliers the importance of registering their company. Large customers are still requiring minority suppliers to present their certifications in order to count their purchases for contract purposes.

Please direct new and existing minority and women-owned suppliers to Sysco’s Minority Supplier Registration Portal via the website here.

The registration portal allows Sysco to source various MWBE suppliers for products of interest, when the need arises. It also allows the supplier to upload their MBE, WBE, SBA, Hubzone and (8A) certificates so that we have them available when needed, as well as create and/or update their company profile.

Why Supplier Diversity is Important to Sysco Operating Companies

• Restaurant decision makers, with whom Sysco does business, are becoming increasingly multicultural, multilingual and multifaceted and often require "Nitch" or unique products from minorities or women-owned companies.
• Minorities and women represent the fastest growth in the consumer/business base, and contribute dramatically to the revenue stream that major corporations, including Sysco, enjoy.
• MWBEs can offer a potentially better price for Sysco and non-Sysco Brand products.
• Sysco can potentially receive quicker turnaround and better or expanded levels of service from MWBEs.
• Supporting MWBEs allow Sysco to give back to the communities where Sysco employees live, work and do business.
• Supplier diversity helps MWBEs grow and participate on a level playing field with other Sysco suppliers.
• Many key customers, including the military, national accounts and gaming customers, track and depend upon Sysco's Tier 1 purchases from minority and women-owned supplier partners.
