Our Community Approach
When it comes to giving back in our communities, it just makes sense for Sysco to focus on food and make it our charitable priority. Providing healthy and nutritious food to children, families and seniors in underserved areas is our primary focus. Our goal is to direct 75 percent of community donations and volunteerism toward hunger relief initiatives, taking a stand in the fight against hunger.
Sysco has a long history of feeding children through our partnership with Share Our Strength, which began in 2002. Now we’re excited to not only reach children, but to focus on families and seniors as well.
In the Houston area, Sysco’s Corporate Headquarters partners with a core group of organizations in the hunger and feeding space. Examples of this include significant five-year commitments to Houston Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, which will provide the Houston community with the following benefits:
- Houston Food Bank – 2.25 million meals supplied to families in the Greater Houston area.
- Meals on Wheels – 1.8 million breakfast meals delivered to seniors in the Greater Houston area.
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston – More than 51,000 children served at 11 Sysco Kids Cafes.
Sysco also partners in the Houston area with Kids’ Meals, Target Hunger, Urban Harvest, Brighter Bites, American Red Cross and United Way. And while getting food where it’s needed is our primary goal, secondary focus areas include education programs that foster a skilled workforce, and providing support and job opportunities for veterans.
Houston and National Partnerships
A Sysco Serves Committee is charged with overseeing charitable funding in the Houston area and any national partnerships we consider. The committee reviews contributions on an annual basis. Requests should be submitted prior to February 1 and will be reviewed in the February/March time frame. If an organization is selected for funding, the donation will be made in the following fiscal year (after July 1).
Local Community Partnerships
Sysco’s operating companies independently manage their community giving and volunteer programs within the areas they serve, working with local nonprofits and using a similar hunger relief strategy.
