Encouraging Education

Eula Mae and John F. BaughThe most vital link between our present and our future is education. Sysco is a proud supporter of higher education and empowering our youth to become leaders of tomorrow. We understand the importance of education in advancing our society and believe that promoting education affords our youth endless possibilities and opportunities.

Sysco Corporation established the John F.
and Eula Mae Baugh (pictured right) Sysco Scholarship to honor its first Chief Executive Officer and his wife. This program recognizes Sysco associates by assisting their children who are pursuing undergraduate education at accredited four-year colleges and universities within the United States and Canada.

From John Baugh's early days as an associate in a retail supermarket, he believed that integrity, honesty, hard work, tenacity, perseverance and common sense were the backbone of a successful business. Sysco seeks to reinforce these basic concepts through its ongoing business culture and by encouraging the children of its associates to distinguish themselves by seeking excellence in education. The John F. and Eula Mae Baugh Sysco Scholarship program is a valuable benefit to Sysco associates and constitutes a great investment in education.

Sysco’s commitment to diversity is the inspiration behind our enthusiastic support of numerous minority focused scholarship programs including scholarships offered to children of employees, as well as minority scholarship programs such as the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the Organization of Chinese Americans, and the American Indian College Fund. We have contributed nearly $1 million in total scholarships from 2003 through 2009. Listed below are just a sample of a few programs:

United Negro College Fund Scholarships (UNCF): We are a proud corporate sponsor of the UNCF, the nation’s largest, oldest, most successful and comprehensive African-American higher education assistance program.

American Indian College Fund (AICF): Through our partnership with the AICF, Sysco helps provide scholarships and other support for the nation’s 34 tribal colleges, which play a vital role in preparing our Native American students for a brighter tomorrow.

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU): Sysco supports HACU and its’ mission to promote Hispanic success through higher education.

Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA): Sysco has historically supported the OCA, which aims to better the lives of more than 10 million Asian Pacific Americans living in the United States.

Matching Gifts Program: As part of our continuing commitment to education and development, Sysco matches associate contributions to two and four year accredited institutions of higher learning. Associate contributions are matched on a dollar for dollar basis from $50 up to the calendar year maximum of $5,000 to a qualifying institution of higher learning. There is no cost to the associate or a recipient to use the Matching Gifts Program.
