Keeping Plenty of Fish in the Sea

Back to Current Issue

boatsWe're always working to bring you the very best, from the very best sources. And when it comes to seafood, overfishing is often a concern. That's why Sysco makes every effort to assess where our seafood comes from and how it's harvested.

We've challenged ourselves and our suppliers to ensure sound management and harvesting practices for our Sysco Brand wild-caught seafood offerings, and we pledge that by 2015, 100 percent of our top 10 wild-caught seafood species will be sourced from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified fisheries, fisheries undergoing MSC assessment and fishery improvement projects. We’re doing our best to make sure our top 10 wild seafood species are responsibly caught, which include tuna, clams, cod, Pollock, shrimp, scallops, salmon, calamari, lobster and crab.

We want to employ the best possible standards for the environment and our customers, so we've taken a two-pronged approach to identify suppliers that use sustainable methods to catch fish and to ensure our seafood has minimal environmental impact.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the world's largest conservation organization. WWF’s expertise in conservation and sustainability make it an extremely valuable ally as Sysco continues to improve its environmental sensitivities. In collaboration with WWF, we're focusing our sustainability efforts around MSC certification, which is the most credible standard for sustainable fishing. With input from over 300 organizations, the MSC created criteria for fisheries to operate in an open, transparent and accredited nature. With the counsel of both WWF and MSC, we strongly believe we're securing seafood in a manner that helps protect these species and supports their future viability.

We’re also working with WWF on fishery improvement projects. Engagement with our mahi mahi and spiny lobster suppliers is intended to initiate a process that assesses the health of these fisheries and move them through the MSC certification process. We’re committed to helping our Sysco family of suppliers move towards a more sustainable future.
