Sysco At A Glance
What we do
Sysco is the global leader in marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, hotels and inns, and other foodservice and hospitality businesses. Although we do not grow or process
any food or own any restaurants, we provide the path that connects these two ends of the foodservice chain.
Since our beginning in 1969, we have founded our success on quality products, strong customer relationships, operational excellence and great people. This formula has enabled us to build a financially strong company and continue to reinvest in the business.
Our Knowledge of the Industry
Our breadth of understanding of the foodservice industry comes from our long history of working side-by-side with every size and type of constituent in the foodservice industry – from national restaurant chains and institutional foodservice providers to small restaurant owners, from large agricultural food producers to small local farmers, from family-owned suppliers to major branded food manufacturers. We’re in the fields and in the kitchens.
We use this knowledge to be a resource for our customers, providing not just products, but business solutions. Our business review process, in which we sit down with customers to understand their needs and offer the advice and services that will support their success, is unmatched in the foodservice industry.
How We Operate
Each year, Sysco delivers more than 1 billion cases of food and related products to more than 400,000 customers in the United States, Canada and around the world. We serve these customers through a network of local operating companies complemented by specialty business groups.
Broadline
Our 94 locally focused broadline operating companies, distribute a wide range of Sysco brand and other food and non-food products to both independent and chain restaurant customers and other foodservice locations ranging from sports arenas to healthcare and educational facilities. Our local marketing associates work closely with our customers to identify and meet their needs.
SYGMA
Our 20 SYGMA operating locations focus exclusively on certain chain restaurant locations. Centralized functions allow SYGMA to work closely with the corporate purchasing systems of national and regional chains.
Specialty Companies
We meet the needs of customers who are looking for specialized and differentiated products through our specialty meat and produce companies. Our lodging industry products company distributes personal care guest amenities, equipment, housekeeping supplies, room accessories and textiles to the lodging industry.
Breadth of Services
While food is at the heart of our business, Sysco offers a surprising breadth of products and services to support our customers, from restaurant design consulting to kitchen composting systems.
We distribute kitchen equipment, dining room furniture, linens, dishes and glassware; offer a wide selection of eco-friendly paper and disposable serving items; and, through a new partnership with EcoLab, provide high-quality cleaning and food safety items.
We also partner with a range of service providers who can design and print menus, develop and buy advertising, repair an air conditioner, manage payrolls and even provide insurance and employee benefits. These services, under our aptly named Sysco iCare umbrella, leverage Sysco’s scale to benefit independent restaurant owners.
Leadership
From our founding by John Baugh, who first envisioned a national foodservice distribution network, Sysco has a history of strong leaders. The members of our senior management team are respected across the industry for their insight and commitment to the quality of the foodservice business.
As the largest foodservice distributor in North America, Sysco takes an active role in industry associations such as the International Foodservice Distributors Association. We also provide support at both local and national levels to nonprofit organizations that work to end hunger.
