The January milk-feed price ratio was the best in two years suggesting better profitability for milk farmers.
Milk production is anticipated to trend below 2009 levels over the next several months but the intensity of the declines
is likely to lessen as the year progresses. The January dairy replacement heifer herd was 2.4% larger than 2009 which
indicates that milk farmers should be able to ramp up output rather quickly once consistent normal profitability returns.
That may be a while given the recent decline in milk futures. The cheese markets may bottom soon.
