In our distribution facilities

Regional Distribution Center Model
The Regional Distribution Center (RDC) model is designed to cut waste out of the supply chain. We have significantly improved our ability to efficiently handle cases at lower energy costs. For example, much of our inbound freight has been converted to rail, and the rest of it has been shifted to move in fully loaded trucks. This means less total trucks on the road with lower fuel consumption to move the same amount of total cases.

Warehouse Energy Efficiency
We have implemented energy-reduction and energy-saving measures in both new facilities and existing operations. For example, lighting retrofits-including motion detectors-and variable frequency controls on refrigeration equipment should help us reach our fiscal year 2007 goal of reducing electric kilowatt hours by five percent.

Pallet Bands
We are replacing shrink-wrap with large, elastic bands to secure pallets of product for storage in the warehouses, creating a positive environmental impact through:
  • Reduced shrink-wrap usage
  • Reduced garbage/waste
  • Increased safety and sanitation

    Shrink Management
Shrink management solutions are designed to help reduce inventory shrink expense at the operating company. Overall benefits include:
  • Reduced waste
  • Increased product integrity
  • Increased product safety

    Electronic Billing and Payments
We currently offer the capability for customers to receive their billing statements electronically through email, and we plan to rollout web payment capabilities in the first quarter of 2009. Electronic billing and payment capabilities reduce mailing expenses, paper costs, CO2, and administrative time. Additional electricity, solvent emissions, and solid wastes are bi-products the Opco, the USPS, and the Customer expend when paper billings and payments are used versus electronic billing and payments. The United States Post Office recently released a comprehensive study on this called, "Life Cycle Inventory of Mail". Every 1st class mail piece generates 87 grams of CO2. A weekly electronic customer can reduce our carbon footprint by 22.5 pounds per year. If 50,000 customers used electronic billing and payments, then Sysco could eliminate about 1.3 million pounds of CO2 each year.
