Through the products we sell
Buy Local, Sell Fresh
A select group of Sysco operating companies has started
testing the idea of procuring fresh, locally grown produce for
restaurant customers. This Buy Local, Sell Fresh program helps
us deliver the freshest, best-tasting food to our customers while
contributing to the ongoing success of smaller, local farms and
producers. And because local food doesn't have to travel very
far, Buy Local, Sell Fresh reduces carbon dioxide emissions and
wasteful packing materials while saving on transportation costs.
While some hardier foods can withstand industrial harvesting
equipment and lengthier travel without suffering in quality and
taste, Buy Local, Sell Fresh can mean more options, more flavors
and more taste. Often locally procured produce can be delivered
within 24 hours of harvest for the freshest possible flavors and
less inventory burden.
Design for the Environment Program
Sysco has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
(EPA) Design for the Environment (DfE) program, which
seeks and promotes innovative chemical products, technologies
and practices that benefit human health and the environment.
We developed an improved set of 16 cleaning products for
institutional laundering, dish washing, glass and surface cleaning,
odor treatment, and multi-purpose cleaning. Through the use
of these substances, which contain no inorganic phosphates,
chlorine bleach or environmentally harmful surfactants
common to most detergents and cleaners, 92,142 pounds of
phosphates have been replaced by DfE reformulations since the
program began.
Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative
Since 2004, we have replaced 345,876 pounds of nonylphenol
ethoxylate surfactants (NPEs), which can harm aquatic life, with
safer formulations in Sysco Brand chemical products.
The EPA is developing the Safer Detergents Stewardship
Initiative (SDSI) to recognize companies that voluntarily
phase out or commit to phasing out these products. Sysco is
committed to the total replacement of such formulations by the
end of calendar year 2007.
