Keeping it in the Family

Local Woman Owned Business, Kim & Gary’s Ice Cream Machine located on Diamond Hill Road in Cumberland, Rhode Island

The Ice Cream Machine Inc. was started in 1977 by Russell Kisseberth. After being diagnosed with MS, Russell was let go from his job and needed to find a way to support his family. He purchased a small batch freeze ice cream maker and the town allowed him to convert his garage into an ice cream parlor. His daughter Kim was going to school at the time, but came home to help him run the business for 8 years until he had to move to Florida due to his illness. In 1985, Kim agreed to purchase the business due to Kim’s knowledge and desire to keep what her and her father worked so hard for. Gary had his own career and Kim ran the business until 2000 when Gary changed careers and decided to help her grow the wholesale side of the business. First year wholesale sales through Sysco Boston were around $5,800 and 2017 sales were close to 1 million; selling three Sysco’s OPCOs:  Boston, Connecticut and Northern New England.

The Ice Cream Machine currently employees about 50 employees, is certified under the requirements of the AIB International consolidated standards for dairy, and the retail shop is a popular spot during the spring and summer months. With the wholesale growing every year, we are optimistic for the future.
